ACTIVITIES WE DID TODAY:

Played “Two Truths and a Lie” to learn more about each! We found out some interesting things from each other and there were many surprises!

Also played “Who am I” (Women Leaders Version) and guessed which “celebrities” on the panel were positive or negative role models.

Shared personal stories

Journaled about when we experienced grief or loss and shared some of our experiences with one another.

Broke into small groups. One group discussed the impact of divorce in their lives. The other group discussed their experiences with grief or loss. It was interesting to see how these experiences related to all our lives! I think we learned a lot from each other!

Made paper chains that included names of people who we can go to for support during “down” times. We hung them around the room.

Had a yoga instructor come in to show us good ways to relax and breathe when we feel stressed. Some of the poses we did were tree, sun salutations, and downward dog.

I was really impressed with the connection girls made when they gave voices to their personal stories! I’m so proud of the progress we’ve already made on our second day!

The 1st day of camp was a complete success. All the girls were excited to meet new people and ready to get the camp started. Today we focused on the issues of Self-Esteem. Through the day the girls participated in workshops, journal writing, sharing, arts, and of course FUN! The journal topic for today was “Share Your Story”, everyone was asked to write about their childhood (the good, the bad, the ugly) and reflect and describe how they have changed over the years and where they hope to go in the years to come. After everyone found their story, we gave our stories voices. All the girls were able to share their stories with one another and gain a sense of compassion and empathy for each other. The day ended with a CRAZY art project. All the girls were excited and worked diligently to create their journals and camp bags. It is incredible the creative nature these girls have. I had so much fun and cannot wait for tomorrow. “Defy Conformity and Embrace Originality” Lady Gaga

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE CAMP FROM FACILITATORS:

What do you feel when you open a fashion magazine? Do you like what you see? Or are you disgusted? How about when you turn on the television? Well, during the Girls’ Stories, Girls’ Voices camp this summer, we will be discussing those feelings. We will spend time talking about what we as viewers can trust as being real and what is simply impossible. I look forward to meeting all of you and learning about your feelings on the media. See you soon! Brittni

My focus during the week of Girls’ stories, Girls’ Voices will be on bullying and teen violence. I’m sure everyone has had some experience with bullying either as a victim, aggressor, or onlooker. This is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed particularly in schools. As a future educator, I have geared a lot of my research towards the bullying that takes place in schools and how to prevent it. I hope that by understanding why these activities take place, I will be better able to assist victims of teenage violence and possibly stop it from occurring. I look forward to the chance to work with you girls and hear your stories and provide feedback including ways to cope and deal with bullying and violence, and hopefully make in impact on your lives. Kacy

The topic I have chosen to research is on adolescent girls body image. Body image is something each girl will struggle with at some point during her adolescence. It is my hope that during the camp we will find ways to become happy with the way we look and encourage others do to the same in order to decrease the risk and prevalence of eating disorders and extreme dieting in today’s society. Lindsay

“As a past facilitator for Girls’ Stories, Girls’ Voices, I feel very fortunate to have been able to be a part of a great adventure with the girls. I felt that the week brought about great changes and new realizations for both the girls and myself. While I may have been a facilitator, I felt the girls and I grew together to get to know eachother better, as well as to get to know ourselves better. The week is a great chance for girls to learn a little more about themselves and to begin to appreciate the girls around them. I wish all girls had the opportunity to experience what I experienced and the girls around me experienced during this week” Lauren Roberts

Hope you have been enjoying the beautiful weather! I am excited to begin camp and hope you all are looking forward to the fun activities. I remember in the weeks before camp, I had first day jitters… So, if you are getting nervous or wondering what to expect, I can tell you from experience, this week will be a highlight of your summer. Not only will you meet new people and make friends, but you will also express yourself and be creative in fun ways you may not have thought of before. Though the last time I participated in GVGS was over 5 years ago, some of the things I learned at camp have stuck with me. GVGS taught me to be open, self-assured, try new things, and share my creativity with others. I’m confident all of you will have a similar experience. See you soon!! Liz
